IslandWood opened in the fall of 2002 and operates a year-round educational facility staffed with experienced, full-time education faculty. During the school year classes of 4th, 5th, & 6th grade students come to IslandWood for a 4-day residential program. Students participate in experiential and project-based field programming that appeals to many different learning styles and interests. An on-site Graduate Program offers 31 graduate credits toward several master's degrees at the University of Washington and a Certificate in Education for Environment and Community. Operating from sustainably designed facilities on a 255-acre campus, the organization also serves as a model for energy conservation and community stewardship. Position Overview
The Service Member will plan and lead environmental education activities for 4th, 5th, and 6th grade students from inner city and rurally located schools. Develop relationships with classroom teachers and students to disseminate information about IslandWood's school programs through school visits and presentations. Conduct ongoing visits with partnership schools to reinforce academic learning and quality service learning projects. Help develop, pilot, and revise IslandWood's School Partnerships' curriculum focusing on stewardship, including assessment that integrates science, arts, and technology. Develop and organize teaching materials that will be used in these programs.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree
- Detail-oriented, organized, flexible
- High-level teaching / communication skills
- Knowledge of best practices in environmental and sustainability education
- Comfort with and interest in gaining more experience in the formal education system
- Experience communicating with classroom teachers
- Experience with upper elementary grade students through middle school age students in field and project-based programmingKnowledge of trends in STEM education
- Be prepared to lift kits of 20-25 pounds
- Walk on uneven outdoor terrain
- Drivers license and transportation to IslandWood
As in the position description, the School Partnerships Liaison will serve six to eight schools. This is done typically during the normal business hours but will occasionally require evening activities (including travel time). When serving schools on the IslandWood campus, occasional evening hours are required. In both situations, the AmeriCorps Service Member will "flex" their time to compensate for these activities.

Selected member(s) should demonstrate the skills and commitment required to successfully serve in the position, serve 40 hours a week and meet the 1700 minimum hour requirement for a full-time term of service. At a minimum, the following criteria required by the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS) must be met:
- Be a United States citizen or lawful permanent resident (must submit proof as defined by CNCS regulation)
- Be 18-25 years of age at the start date of their service
- Members in tutoring positions must have a high school diploma or GED at time of enrollment
- Pass required criminal background checks
- Not be listed on the National Sex Offender Public Registry (NSOPR)
