<image:title>Resources for Educators - Climate Action Venn Diagram</image:title>
<image:caption>How you – specifically you – can help with climate solutions: To find your meaningful and bespoke way to help address the climate crisis, draw your own Climate Action Venn Diagram. What are you good at? What are your areas of expertise? What can you bring to the table? Think about your skills, resources, and networks—you have a lot to offer. What work needs doing? Are there particular climate and justice solutions you want to focus on? Think about systemic changes and efforts that can be replicated or scaled. There are heaps of options. What brings you joy? Or perhaps a better word is “satisfaction.” What gets you out of bed in the morning? Choose climate actions that energize and enliven you. <image:caption>The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) believes it's vital for every child to learn about the environment. The government agency says that quality environmental education allows students to understand issues facing the environment, participate in finding solutions to these issues, and begin to take action to do their part to make the environment better. Environmental education also requires students to research issues and form their own opinion based on their research. It should help students hone their critical thinking skills and also become more involved in the world around them. Luckily, there are many resources available to aid educators in providing high-quality environmental education. Click here for outdoor opportunities for families.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Students are often fascinated with the drastic environmental changes throughout the seasons, especially if you live in a place where it snows during the winter. We often associate winter with dark nights, freezing temperatures, snow, and ice. In polar and temperate zones in the northern hemisphere, the winter season lasts from December through February. Parts of the U.S. with subtropical or tropical climates may also experience temperature differences during these months, but they may only have two seasons of “wet” and “dry” or “summer” and “winter.” No matter what kind of weather you experience during the next couple months, consider adding these STEM activities to your winter-themed lesson plans.</image:caption>

<image:caption>by Lisa Eschenbach Maybe you want to read up on environmental issues in Washington State…or, maybe you’re looking for good articles for your students. I’ve got a few recommendations. Northwest Indian Fisheries Commission Check out the Quarterly Magazine for great short articles. Your students can read about current tribal fisheries and natural resource management. The Summer 2018 magazine had an article on the Elwha Dam restoration project, using drones to survey streams and trapping non-native green crabs. Newsela This site features news on a wide array of topics. Articles can be adjusted for different reading levels. I searched for Pacific Northwest and found articles on the Cascade Butterfly Project, plans to protect orca whales, and the geology of Mount St. Helens. You can also search by reading level or text level. They also have articles in Spanish. Enjoy your reading.</image:caption>

<image:caption>E3 WA is pleased to host our featured speaker for Saturday of the Rooted in Connection & Community Conference, Hweqwidi Hanford McCloud of the Nisqually Indian Tribe. Hanford is an enrolled member of the Nisqually Nation located in Lacey. Handford shares that his life's work and passion is practicing and teaching the culture and tradition of the Nisqually people. He teaches basket weaving and carving which includes gathering the cedar bark from the cedar tree. He also does informational and educational presentations of the Nisqually Salish people for Yelm and Thurston County schools and professional, private groups. He ultimately loves sharing his culture and history with the public. We are incredibly grateful to have had the opportunity to hear from Hanford at the Growing Together Conference in the fall of 2024, and again this year at our 2025 Rooted in Connection and Community Conference.</image:caption>

<image:title>Conference - Rooted in Community: A Collaborative Journey Through Art and Poetry (multi-day) with Carrie & Jennifer</image:title>
<image:caption>Join artist Carrie Ziegler and poet Jennifer Johnson for an immersive, evolving keynote experience that unfolds across the three days of the E3 Conference. Through live mural painting and community-generated poetry, this offering invites all attendees to contribute their voices—literally—to a co-created artwork inspired by the conference theme, Rooted in Community. The final mural and collective poem will be unveiled during closing remarks, offering a powerful, imperfect, and beautiful reflection of our shared learning, resilience, and interconnectedness. Jennifer is a poet, swimmer, and lover of all things community. These passions form her core values of clean water and air for everyone. She works professionally as an Education and Outreach Specialist for Thurston County Public Health for the last few decades and helps her family care for a 10 acre organic farm and forest for the future. Carrie harnesses the collective power of art to drive social and environmental transformation. Through her Art in Action initiatives, she collaborates with diverse partners—local governments, organizations, schools, and universities—to create multi-dimensional works that blend participant creativity with pressing societal issues. These projects inspire active engagement, bringing people together to create lasting change.</image:caption>

Pick any phenomenon or “thing” about the natural or designed world, such as daffodils blooming before tulips, the inner workings of a thermometer, or the way water flows through a local park. What do you notice about that phenomenon? What do you wonder? Then dive in deeper with the question prompts. I earned a Bachelor's degree in U.S. History and Environmental Policy and later a Master’s in Education both from Gonzaga University, I have continued my passion for education by demonstrating a commitment to academic excellence and a multidisciplinary approach to education throughout the community. My focus is developing and promoting outdoor learning, conservation education and career/technical educational programs. By fostering a connection between students and nature, we can contribute to the holistic development of young individuals and instill a sense of local natural resource stewardship and career development. I envision a future where education goes beyond traditional boundaries, embracing innovative and accessible practices that equip students with the knowledge and tools to thrive in a future filled with unforeseen challenges and uncertainty.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Gabriela Rivarde is a Wixarika biologist, environmental educator, and lifelong advocate for the natural world. Her deep connection to nature extends beyond her professional life, she is an avid scuba diver, outdoor explorer, and mom to a human child, two dogs and a leopard gecko. Her passion for all living things fuels her dedication to culturally responsive and healing-centered environmental education. With a background spanning field biology and conservation leadership, Gabriela’s journey took a transformative turn when she witnessed how traditional conservation models often excluded the very communities most connected to the land. This inspired her to integrate her scientific expertise with the Indigenous values of reciprocity and "right relations." She now designs and facilitates innovative educational programs that honor traditional knowledge while incorporating trauma-informed and neurodivergent-affirming approaches. Beyond her professional work, Gabriela expresses her creativity and cultural heritage through painting, textile art, weaving, and gourd carving, practices that deepen her understanding of storytelling and interconnectedness. She brings this same creativity and reverence for tradition to her role as an educator and leader. Gabriela holds advanced degrees in Biology and Business Administration and has applied her strategic and scientific insight to roles at institutions like National Audubon Society. She joins E3 Washington with a vision: to help shape an inclusive, equitable, and kin-centric future for environmental education, one where both people and the planet can thrive</image:caption>
