Fall/Winter Monitoring Internship

Description: The Nooksack Salmon Enhancement Association (NSEA) is seeking passionate and dedicated people to support spawner survey monitoring between September 2026 and March 2027. Monitoring Interns will be accompanied by NSEA staff and support thorough weekly surveying of salmon in creeks in Bellingham by walking through 2-3 miles of creek and visually looking for salmon and redds and collecting and recording data. This position provides opportunities to build up professional skills such as field work, data collection, and communication to benefit future career pursuits. The dates of this position are August 25 – March 31, one day per week between Monday and Friday. Priority given to those consistently available on Tuesdays. Weekly schedule will be one 7 10-hour shift depending on the length of the survey. The weekly survey may be rescheduled due to weather or other conflicts. When possible, the survey will be rescheduled for a day the intern is available, however hours are not guaranteed if a reschedule must be set for when the intern is not available. This position is contingent on funding

Stream Stewards Intern

Organization: Nooksack Salmon Enhancement Association

Salary: Stipend of $800 upon successful completion of internship

Description: The Stream Stewards Internship position includes opportunities to learn about, experience, and actively participate in the different facets of NSEA’s work based on individual interests and availability. The primary role of this quarterly position is to lead volunteers in restoration and stewardship activities at community work parties on Saturdays. Interns will support volunteer events in different capacities such as shuttle driving, leading small groups, and supporting educational components like macroinvertebrate identification while working collaboratively with the team. These community work parties are held throughout Whatcom County, where volunteers join NSEA to plant native species, remove invasive species, and more to improve salmon habitat. In addition, interns will engage with the community through salmon sighting events, where we join together in local parks to watch salmon as they return to freshwater to spawn.

Environmental Education Intern

Preschool Education Coordinator

The Preschool Education Coordinator is responsible for facilitating NSEA’s preschool-aged education programs, including Keystone Nature Preschool and Camp Keystone. The coordinator evaluates the programs and creates a successful and positive learning environment. The Preschool Education Coordinator is also responsible for hiring, supervising, and evaluating Preschool Lead Teachers and summer Camp Educators. Lead Teachers assist in the facilitation of the school-year long program Keystone Nature Preschool, and Camp Educators facilitate Camp Keystone’s summer program. Additional responsibilities include tracking program metrics, maintaining supply inventory and supporting occasional NSEA events and programs.

Community & Youth Programs Educator

Friends of the ACFL is seeking a dynamic educator with a strong background in environmental education to deliver programs that help kids and teens build lasting connections with the Anacortes Community Forest Lands. With support from the Community & Youth Programs Manager, this educator will lead the delivery of Friends of the ACFL’s year-round youth education programs, including: school programs for K, 3rd, and 7th graders in the Anacortes School District, summer and school break camps, afterschool programs, and downtown-based programs in the Forest Discovery Center.
